Charles Taylor was convicted of war crimes and crimes against humanity today in connection with the Sierra Leone conflict.

He is the first former head-of-state since the Nuremberg Trials to be convicted by an international court.

Taylor is “guilty of crimes against humanity and war crimes, including murder, rape, slavery and the use of child soldiers. But the judges said the prosecution failed to prove that Mr. Taylor directly commanded the rebels responsible for the atrocities.”

A wonderful day for justice and human rights.

I only had a week to make this so it isn’t as clean as I would like it to be but I think it works. Let me know what you think!

most of you will probably forget about Kony…cause some new fad will turn up. so hopefully some of you stick to your word and actually do something.

(via soul-surfer)

It has been over 20 years, over 30,000 children affected and it is time for Joseph Kony to be found, arrested, and put on trial for his crimes. Kony and the LRA need to be stopped and children need their lives back.

Children are stolen from their beds at night. Girls are forced into sexual slavery and boys as young as 5 years old are forced to carry guns and be soldiers.

2012 is the year the Kony needs to be stopped.

Today poverty is what scares me - the poverty of my family, my people, my country. I pray that one day we will not live on aid, because poverty is like a virus that torments you mentally and emotionally. It is a slow and painful death of hope, humiliating and degrading, a parasite that sucks life from everyone it touches… Give people something to eat today and show them how to do it for themselves tomorrow. I am proof that one person can rise above any challenge, and if I can, then so will other if they are given the chance. Hope must never die.

I’m still a soldier, fighting with my pen and paper, for peace till the day I cease.

Peace for us wouldn’t be real until roads, schools, homes, and hospitals had been built, families reunited, and children educated to be leaders. Peace may be negotiated by politicians, but it is something written in hearts and minds, not on pieces of paper.
